Objective #1
ExCom Team Building
French Unicorns in the Industry
Challenge
The current ExCom team has been significantly altered by the arrival of a new leader. His new executive committee, which is 80% constituted of members from a spin-off of a major French industrial group, is surprised by the expectations of the new CEO, who draws on his industrial experience in aerospace and from leading startups. It is imperative to replace the “it’s not my fault, I did my best” mentality and siloed work, which are both associated with the old large structure, with cross-functional work that is motivated by passion, commitment, and enthusiasm.
Solution
We have developed a 3-day program on the following themes:
• An outdoor activity (surfing and stand-up paddle) to work on individual behaviors and highlight the acceptance of failure and resilience.
• Given that the Comex is predominantly female, we invited Rick Odums, an international modern jazz dancer and choreographer, to share his experiences and work on passion, motivation, and individual excellence in service to the collective.
• An international athlete provides an intervention on the significance of cultivating conquering behaviors to become a high-performing individual within a high-performing team, combining theory with practical application in a course setting.
A lead facilitator established the connection between these three interventions and the team’s issue by conducting a debriefing for each intervention to formalize the collective and individual action plans. To facilitate the post-seminar debriefings, a photographer was present during the three days to take photos and create videos. Several post-seminar meetings with the team have taken place to follow up on the implementation of collective and individual action plans.
TESTIMONY OF THE PRESIDENT?
This Team Building was a major event in the development of my Executive Committee. There was a before and after because the high-quality participants left a strong impression and were transparent. This encouraged us to share all the unspoken things that existed. I had previously engaged in team-building activities, but upon returning to the office, the good intentions quickly faded. This was not the case here, partly because the photos and videos allowed us to share these moments over time, and especially because the facilitator’s set-up meeting points forced us to ensure that the collective and individual action plans delivered the expected results, which made all the difference.
Objective #2
Executive Committee Team Building
A Global Business Unit (Services) of a major aerospace group.
Challenge
The new CEO’s team was highly effective; however, tensions occasionally developed due to recurring issues. In order to prioritize the efficiency and interests of the business unit and resolve significant issues, the CEO sought to enhance the dynamics of his Executive Committee in order to achieve greater excellence.
Solution
We have developed a 3-day program on the following themes:
• An outdoor activity (surfing and stand-up paddle) to work on individual behaviors and highlight the acceptance of failure and resilience.
• An intervention by Rory Underwood (former international player of the England rugby team and former RAF fighter pilot) on both the theoretical and practical aspects of creating high-performing teams. What are the individual and collective behaviors necessary for the sustainable construction of a high-performing team?
A facilitator established the connection between these two interventions and the team’s issue by conducting a debriefing for each intervention to formalize the collective and individual action plans. To facilitate the post-seminar debriefings, a photographer was present during the three days to take photos and create videos. Several post-seminar meetings with the team have taken place to follow up on the implementation of collective and individual action plans.
THE TESTIMONY OF THE BU CEO
A moment of great significance that united all individuals. The seminar resulted in a complete transformation of behaviors; however, as is customary, old habits returned a few days or weeks later. The seminar’s commitments were significantly reinforced by the facilitator’s follow-up, which was a significant factor. This compelled the team to exert the requisite effort to ensure that the anticipated behaviors were ingrained in our team’s DNA. Today, I am genuinely fortunate to have an executive team that is exceedingly efficient.
